Currently the choir has vacancies in all voices but particularly for sopranos and tenors. Choral experience and the ability to read music are of course welcome, but reasonably good singers whose sight-reading is not so strong will not necessarily be turned away; the main requirement is enthusiasm for singing good music well.
Rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from early or mid-September to July at 7.45pm in the upstairs hall at Beckenham Methodist Church, Bromley Road, Beckenham (pictured here).
Prospective new members can come along to any rehearsal and try us out. Those who would like to join are asked to meet the Musical Director for a brief voice test, usually by their third rehearsal. Alternatively, they can attend one of our Open Rehearsals. To find out when the next open rehearsal will take place, click here.
Our rehearsal venue at Beckenham Methodist Church is on several bus routes and is just a few minutes’ walk from Beckenham Junction railway station and Tramlink terminus, enabling easy access from London Victoria, Bromley, Orpington, Croydon and the surrounding area. See the locator map below. The car park in St George’s Road, a short walk from the Methodist Church, is free after 7.30pm.
Annual Subscription. The standard subscription is currently £180 per annum, and payment can be spread over three terms with the agreement of the Treasurer.
Concerts and Venues. This busy, friendly choir performs three or four concerts a year in various local venues. The vast majority of SLS concerts take place at the Beckenham Methodist Church and St. George's Church, Beckenham's Anglican parish church. Other Beckenham venues include Beckenham Baptist Church, Elm Road; St Paul's Church, Brackley Road; and Christ Church, Fairfield Road. The SLS also very occasionally appears outside the Bromley borough, for example in Blackheath Concert Halls and further afield in the villages of Mere, Wiltshire, and East Malling, Kent. The choir presents a broadly-based repertoire at all these venues (see Our Repertoire for more information on the kinds of music we perform).
Social events. Organised social events feature strongly in our calendar and have included parties, summer barbecues, informal madrigal singing, quiz nights and country walks.
Please note that although we rehearse in rooms belonging to the Beckenham Methodist Church and most of our concerts take place in the cosy interior of this fine church building with such an intimate feel, we must make it clear that we are not a Methodist choir and would not necessarily wish to be thought of as a church choir. Our wide-ranging repertoire covers both secular and sacred music.
If you enjoy singing a wide range of music, mostly a cappella or with organ or light instrumental accompaniment all in a friendly atmosphere, then contact our Membership Secretary by telephone on 020 8656 2815 or by emailing either the SLS chairman or the membership secretary.
As the composer William Byrd once wrote:
Since singing is so fine a thing,
I wish all men would learn to sing.
And all ladies too, of course.
